Is Varanasi Safe? A Practical Guide From a Local
Varanasi is safe for most travellers who use common sense. Most problems are not violence but crowds, traffic, stomach trouble and a few well-worn scams.

The real risks
- Traffic: the lanes are narrow, and motorbikes and cows move fast. Watch your step and look both ways.
- Crowds: on the ghats and at the aarti, keep your bag in front of you.
- Stomach trouble: drink bottled or filtered water and go easy on raw food in the first days.
- Heat: from April to June, plan the outdoor hours for early morning and evening.
Scams to recognise
- The ’free’ tour that ends in a shop. Say no politely and walk on.
- A stranger who offers to explain the ghat and then asks for money, often for wood for a funeral. Decline and keep going.
- Boats with an unclear price. Agree the price and the duration before you get in.
- Taxis and rickshaws that refuse the meter. Agree the price first, or ask your hotel to book it.
How a private guide helps
With a guide you do not need to negotiate every step, you know where the sensible stalls and boats are, and the people around you know who you are with. It also keeps you away from the touts who wait at the main junctions.
Keep a photo of your hotel card on your phone, and tell someone at home where you are staying.
